The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme is the largest dog training programme in the UK and is open to all dogs, no matter their age, breed or Kennel Club registration. The scheme has four levels, puppy foundation, bronze, silver and gold, and focuses on quality standards of training for dogs and owners. The scheme includes many domestic obedience exercises.
Once you have completed the gold level of the Good Citizen Dog scheme, or if you are actively competing in dog sport and your dog has basic obedience then you can take part in the working trials. This is a competitive sport that is based on the civilian equivalent of police dog work. The training develops and tests many canine skills – obedience and control, intelligence and independence, searching and tracking, agility and fitness. Trials is physically demanding for both dog and handler, but is also great fun and extremely rewarding.
Classes are held on Tuesday nights at St Thomas’ Hall in Keith (St. Thomas Church Hall, Chapel Street, Keith,
AB55 5AL) and are priced at £3 per class plus an annual membership fee of £7 for an individual and £10 for joint, with all proceeds going back into the club as well as regular donations being made to charity. The club is completely run by volunteers and always welcomes new members.
