Scotland’s First Scots Toun signs for Keith

As many of you will be aware Keith achieved the Scots Toun award back in 2014 (photo of certificate attached) and the signs have now been installed at the entrances to Keith.
This has come about as Keith Community Council applied for the Scots Toun award which was set up by the Scottish Government and the Scots Language Centre in Perth.
The aim of this award was to recognise the use, celebrate, support and promote the Scots language in community life, identifying communities where Scots culture is encouraged and promoted. This was split into the following criteria – Spoken, Visible, Events, Young People, Opportunities to Learn and Promotion by means of festivals, kirk services, signage, the development of language-based tourism etc.
Its purpose was to create a network of Scots Touns throughout Scotland, but (as far as we are aware) funding was removed and has never been reinstated. Keith could therefore be the only Scots Toun for the foreseeable future, and although we may eventually be one of many, we will always be the first!
